Outside My Work Day

In the beginning...
Life flies by - really. Various flashes of my life fly by and I remember looking out the window from my crib (really), I remember the delicision egg salad sandwich mom packed me in first grade which other children made fun of, I remember my first kiss, I remember a rainy high school graduation day, my first date with my husband, my wedding, the birth of my children, where I was on days like 9/11, where I was when I received notice of a full scholarship to college, the joy of achieving my master's degree in healthcare management. My point, look how looking back all this has gone by in a minute. Would I change my life, maybe about 10% of it, but overall no.
There are various elements and people who drive who I am, in particular my family, my friends, my colleagues and my job. One day I remember dearly, a day which impacted who I am and my personal drive, was the day I walked through the doors of Massachusetts General Hospital. Never did I realize the passion which would grow for an institution for which I hold dearly, like a family member (corny, I know). This gave me more a passion for excellence which is now ingrained in who I am, but I've encouraged my children to strive for excellence as well. What, in the beginning was a 9-5 job, has turned into a career that I live and when I'm not physically at work contributing to MGH's excellence, I want to be out helping others - my family, my friends, my parish, as well as a few professional organizations and finally my newest venture, a professional society.
Did I ever imagine I'd be in such a great place at this point? My parents recommended that I just get married and that would be my life. I'm thankful I've not only got the cake, but that I'm thoroughly enjoying eating the cake as well!
So I'm not sure where I'm taking this blog. We can talk about helping others outside the work day. How to achieve while balancing family and work. Being happy with what you have. Whatever goes on outside your work day (even if the outside spills into your workday). Gosh, I'm looking forward to this journey!!
